    The stainless steel rod is a replacement for the panel itself. It is used in the construction of larger buildings/projects, simply because you don't want to use panels all the time. That would be boring. Stainless steel is extremely strong and we made it part of the kit because it looks really good. Mounting is with two wooden nuts. It is primarily installed in holes without thread.
